Being a Vet?
Hello everyone! It has been a while since I last updated this blog so here are a few things I would like to update on this entry.
A year has passed and;
31August 2016: I had registered myself in Doctor Veterinary Medicine in UPM.
Today, I would like to share my EXPERIENCE DURING OUR CAREER WEEK.
During Career Week, I learnt that being a Veterinarian isn't merely about playing with cats, dogs or cows (bos indicus) but being a veterinarian is also about being the front line for our national food security.
Attending the Career Week had really widen up my horizons and viewpoints of being a veterinary student, and I had surely boosted up my knowledge in this field.
Booom! Here is what came into my mind of what being a vet in Malaysia actually is.
- Zoo veterinarian. So, imagine yourself taking care of the smallest monkey in the world and being able to interact with it, or perhaps playing with the cute pandas. Sounds fun and exciting, doesn't it? hahaha
- Working with government. (Here, you'll be doing a lot of meat inspection)You get the privilege of traveling with fully sponsored
- Businessmen (perhaps in clinics, being a farmer, animal hotel, selling pet medications )
Or you can also work with big pet food companies.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF BEING A VET
(in my personal opinion) is that;
- You get lots of fun playing with animals especially if you are an animal lover.
- It is not merely working inside an office, you get to spend ample of time being outdoors.
- You will need to travel from places to places.
And... Know a lot of things, of course.
As a Veterinary student (DVM1), I personally would like to be a veterinarian who is more involved towards aquaculture (wanna be fish doctor) which means doing a lot of jobs underwater, although I am not such an expert swimmer myself... LOL
Other than that, I'm also interested in ruminant species and would like to be involved in animal pharmaceuticals.
I love the idea of being able to have fun and adventures by working in the wildlife sanctuary.. wahoo
To put it short, there are actually a lot of things you can do by being a veterinarian.. kan kan kan
However, there are some precautions we must take as a vet. Part of that is we must be willing to accept any injuries that may occur caused by the animals. It is not an easy job, but a rather challenging one, especially when having to deal with the animals. Some days will go smoothly, but you will have days when there would be many obstacles or even threats.
On top of that, as a vet, one must be able to face any negative outlooks and perceptions that the society and community have towards veterinary doctors. There are a high number of them that will look down upon this occupation as a result of the stereotypes especially in Malaysia.
Nonetheless, that itself is something we as veterinary students and future veterinary doctors should accept as part of the challenge to become excellent veterinarians and later on prove to the society with quality values in our field of work.
And to end my sharing today, one of the most important factor is of course being inspired by Prof Dato' Dr Mohammed Shariff Mohamed Din by his speech and his successful achievements. His success in this field has become a source of motivational influence for me to achieve my goals and dreams.
I hope one fine day, I can be a successful vet myself.
